Case Studies
The following case studies are based on real-life situations at our activity camps. The names and identifying properties of the children and families mentioned in these case studies have been redacted to protect their privacy.
The Cooking Session Effect
Athena Activities has worked closely with Orbit Housing Association to secure a grant that subsidises a 1:2 for Child A and their sibling (Child B). Providing both siblings with three nutritious meals every day helped remove their frustrations and improved their social skills and concentration. Encouraging both siblings to engage in our cooking activities gave them a sense of pride and achievement. Building the self-esteem of our children is essential to their development. Athena Activities built a channel of communication with the family, discussing advice on behaviour support and healthy meal options. The outcome of this was Child A’s uncontrollable behaviour and withdrawal became enthusiasm to attend and become a social butterfly. Child A and B’s confidence and well-being have improved drastically.
A Safe Space
Child D and their sibling (Child E) attended Athena Activities during the summer holiday as a way to provide both them and their mum with a safe place where they were able to have fun and simply be children. Both girls only attended for a couple of weeks, when their mum disclosed to the manager of the camp that they would not be able to attend anymore due to moving to a different area. Both Child D and E, while at Athena Activities were able to forget about all of their worries and enjoyed having fun with the other children. Our camp supported their mum to also know that her children were in a safe environment and having fun. Although we only had these children attend for a couple of weeks, we were able to get to know them and see them blossom from both being very shy to more outgoing girls.
